Souls in Symbiosis
Role: Developer
Tools: p5.js, air dry clay
Souls in Symbiosis is an art piece coded in p5.js that utilizes a Brownian tree algorithm to simulate lichen
growth. It explores the artist's interests in determinism, inherent meaning, fate, and what it means to
belong.
Did cyanobacteria and fungi stumble upon one another, their intertwining a mere coincidence, the
relationship only formed by chance? Or were they pre-determined to always find one
another? Were their cells tied together by a string of fate, their meeting written in the stars? Was
joining together as a lichen their destiny?
Souls in Symbiosis (physical) was on view in the STEAM Engine exhibition at Rhizome DC in December 2024. It
was then sold in an auction.
